Turkmenistan was until 1991 part of the Soviet Union and is now an independent state in Central Asia. Turkmenistan is known for its "Door to Hell", which is a giant hole in the Karakum Desert, the Great Mashad cemetery and its underground mineral lake Kov Ata. High season runs from May till September.
